Small and Big Taiji

The taiji symbol represents the cyclical process of change. Underlying this belief is the notion that nothing in the present is permanent and within change we have the seeds for the next change. Present actions affect our future, and neither the present nor the future can exist without each other.
You could say that qi is being visually illustrated in the taiji diagram. The white part of the symbol signifies yang qi while the black part signifies the yin qi. Note there is a little of yin in yang and vice versa.

It is said that the universe came into being when wuji (nothingness) gave birth to or transformed to taiji, and taiji gave birth to liangyi (dual polarities) yin yang. However the literal meaning of taiji is axis.

Everything in this universe can be described in the form of big taiji or small taiji.

So what is big taiji – it could be the galaxy, the universe, our planet, the world, a continent, a country, a state, a city or a house. And what is small taiji – it could be as small as a grain of sand.

Let me explain with an example –
If you are looking at your whole house to apply feng shui than this will be counted as the big taiji and each individual rooms will be small taiji. Therefore the house becomes the big taiji and the rooms become small taiji.

In the diagram given above the house has been divided into eight sectors to give the eight directions. This is the big taiji diagram,

In this diagram the study room and the bedroom has been individually divided into eight sectors to get the small taiji diagram.

What is the purpose of big and small taiji?
For that you have to understand that everything in the universe has qi (in other words everything in the universe has life) whether it is as big as the universe or as small as a grain of sand.
In feng shui it means that even though in the bigger picture certain flaws might exist, you can adjust the smaller picture to rectify the flaws.
In the example provided the Northeast corner of the house is missing. While applying certain formula you want to activate the Northeast corner of the house, however since it is missing you are unable to do so. Therefore you can apply the formula in your room (small taiji). Selection of the room will depend on the purpose and the kind of formula you want to apply.
