In this section you will learn how to differentiate between location and direction. In feng shui different formulae require different measurements. It is important to know the difference between location and direction especially while measuring incoming roads location and direction.
LOCATION
This is an example of how to measure the location of an incoming road.
- You will have to stand at your front door. If you live in an apartment then you will need to stand in the main entrance.
- Take your compass/lo pan in your hand and point towards the road. See diagram given below.

- In the example provided the compass is pointing towards East. Therefore the road is located at East.
- This can be applied in knowing the location of main door/rooms in your house/ main gate/road/mountains etc.
DIRECTION
This is an example of how to measure the direction of an incoming road.
- Walk up to your main gate.
- Take your compass/lo pan in your hand and point towards the road. See diagram given below.

- In the example provided the compass is pointing towards Southeast. Therefore the incoming road direction is Southeast.
- For rivers and waterways where you are not sure of the incoming or out going direction just throw a strip of paper into the water, the direction it flows is the outgoing direction, the opposite of that will be the incoming direction.
- For roads it is the flow of traffic that decides the incoming or outgoing direction. See diagram below.

The eight directions will be divided as
| North |
352.5 degrees to 37.5degrees |
| Northeast |
37.5 to 82.5 degrees |
| East |
82.5 to 127.5 degrees |
| Southeast |
127.5 to 172.5 degrees |
| South |
172.5 to 217.5 degrees |
| Southwest |
217.5 to 262.5 degrees |
| West |
262.5 to 307.5 degrees |
| Northwest |
|
Remember to keep the compass on a flat surface and away from metallic, electrical and magnetic interference.
To be continued.
