These are names of the natural landforms (mountains and hills) which act as protectors of a site. Here the terminology dragon, tiger, tortoise and phoenix represent natural mountains. They are also known as the four celestial animals or si ling shou. In a site, it is the side that determines which is a green dragon or a white tiger. The figure below shows how to determine the green dragon, white tiger, black tortoise and red phoenix of a site. In modern times instead of mountains one can study buildings. However do take note, that if a natural mountain exists in the vicinity then buildings will lose their importance.
Generally the left side of the site is called the green dragon, the shape should be tall and beautiful. By beautiful I mean, trees should not be chopped ,or it should not be too rocky and sandy. A healthy dragon is most desirable that means a nice green colored mountain is best in the left side of the site. If it is a building, it should be well maintained and should not be broken or half constructed.
The white tiger lay on the right side of the site. Generally, it is preferred to have the white tiger lower than the green dragon. Otherwise it is believed that the mistress of the house is stronger than the master.
The black tortoise is located behind the site and protects the site from behind. This should be the tallest of the mountains. A round shape is desirable here and it should gradually slope towards the site. This gives the feeling of protection and support.
The red phoenix is towards the front of the house. It could be some small hill/hills or a growth of trees. This is basically to prevent good qi from dissipating. This is the shortest of the mountain/hills. Always remember that the view should not be blocked and your house should be protected at the same time.
Here I would like to mention, that this is one of the basic ways of form school to judge the site. Please do take note that sometimes when advanced feng shui formulas are applied it is not always desirable to have these four protectors. |
