In this article I will try to separate the myths in feng shui from the facts. There are many myths in feng shui that are based on folklores and not in feng shui.
Myth 7
Keeping fish especially arowana, horn fish or gold fish in an aquarium in the Northern/Southeastern direction will bring in wealth.
Fact - Water is considered to be important in feng shui to bring in wealth. However not all houses can have or require a water feature (aquariums, ponds, fountain etc.) in the North/Southeast direction. Feng shui has many formulae, one of the formula's for placement of water to bring in wealth is by using the flying stars method. Again it is better to take the advice of a practitioner before placing a water feature in your house/office because water is a powerful qi harnesser and wrong placement can bring in major problems instead of prosperity.
Myth 8
Feng shui is only for interiors of a house and has nothing to do with external features.
Fact - In feng shui both exteriors and interiors of the house is important. Infact if the external feng shui is not correct or auspicious then doing internal feng shui will only solve half the problem. It is important that the external feng shui of a property be good for it to be beneficial to the owners.
Myth 9
Keeping ducks/crystals in the Southwest will bring in romance for the occupants of the house.
Fact - This is an absolute new age theory and has no basis - none of the ancient feng shui texts mentions keeping ducks/crystals for romance. However donot despair there are a few formulae in feng shui that can help you to get love in your life. And it doesnot involve keeping ducks or crystals.
Myth 10
Keeping dried flowers can bring in bad luck since dried flowers can be considered as dead wood. Anything dead brings in bad qi and is harmful.
Fact - If dried flowers are dead wood then what is wooden furniture? Wooden furniture is more dead than dried flowers therefore according to this logic we should refrain from using wooden furniture and probably start sitting and sleeping on the floor (just a joke). If you like to decorate your house with dried flowers then go ahead and do it, it does not bring in bad qi and is not harmful in any way.
Myth 11
If a fish dies in an aquarium it is said to have to have sacrificed its life by absorbing the bad qi which might have affected the family.
Fact - If your fishes are dying at a rapid rate please check your aquarium there is definitely something wrong with it. No fish can absorb the bad qi and sacrifice its life, its a fish for heaven's sake!
Myth 12
Feng shui is an ancient study and only few have access to its powerful formulae. Laymen cannot understand the way feng shui works because it is mysterious.
Fact - Feng shui is an ancient study. If you have the inclination, then there are many schools/teachers/masters who will teach all the formulae in authentic traditional feng shui for a fee. Feng shui is as mysterious as (a+b)2. One has to understand that feng shui did not develop in one or two years, generations of masters have put in their hard work, research and understandings to develop feng shui the way it is today. There are many formulae in feng shui made for various purposes, if one wishes then he/she can spend time in studying and understanding how these formulae work. |
