Tien di ren - trinity luck
Heaven luck, earth luck and mankind luck - what do they mean?

Tien, Di, Ren - The Chinese believe that a man's luck can be divided into three halves - 1/3 is destiny or heaven luck, 1/3 is karma or mankind luck and 1/3 is geomancy or earth luck.

During the feng shui boom (which is still continuing in many parts of the world), practitioners of all sorts have been born, some say black, some say traditional and some take out a range of products, which are a part of the Chinese custom and sell it as feng shui articles. In this power struggle the initial teachings have been lost. Yes, it is there in every course or every feng shui book but who has the time to learn something as simple as a man's luck can be divided into three halves. Even I never questioned that until recently. There must be a reason why the Masters felt necessary to include that particular piece of information.

Destiny or fate can be calculated and predicted through Bazi or Zi wei do shou (both being two different types of Chinese astrology). Here also the choice lies in the hands of the person concerned. Confused? Many are, when I tell them that the choice is in your hands. The pre-determined part of destiny cannot be changed but there is a probable or variable part for which a person himself is responsible. The freedom of choice does exist, the freedom to take any decisions and bear full responsibility for that. That's the reason an astrologer would always say "possible", because ultimately the decision lies in the querents hands.

Most of the times people visit astrologers when they are disturbed or troubled. It is strange that they always ask the same questions about money, health, relationships, career and that's what most people of today are concerned about. Whatever happened to questions like "what should I do to become a good human being?"

Feng shui is the art of harnessing the energy or forces on earth to help you achieve or fulfill your goals. Feng Shui is based on the principles of the movement of energy qi on earth. Feng Shui is not a miracle drug, it just rules 1/3 of your luck. Important, but just 1/3, is that what everyone is looking for?

Many think - "I know my destiny, I have done 90% feng shui so what can deter me now?" Well, I think most forget the other 1/3 - mankind luck. What is mankind luck? Is it karma? How do we know what is good for us and what is not? How do we calculate karma? Or is there no way to know what karma really is. Here I think the answer lies in bazi (Chinese astrology). When we study bazi, we come across the abstract aspect of the five elements, what do they represent? Every person is a combination of good and bad, it is only because good exists that bad does to (the basic underlying concept of yin and yang). The characterization of a person can be done through the elements. It is through the study of the abstract aspect of the elements that one can take care of his or her mankind luck. It is difficult to control the negative aspects in one's character, but who has ever said that life is a walk in the park. By controlling the negative aspects, one's mankind luck can be improved upon.

I have read about feng shui providing balance and harmony in quite a few books, many argue it does not, many feel it does. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but somehow I feel what one should question where man needs balance and harmony? Does feng shui mean living in harmony with nature? Well I don't think it does. Then why use words like balance and harmony. Can it mean that to attain harmony or to feel peaceful one has to be balanced? And how can a person balance himself or herself, by being correct (mankind luck), by doing what one is supposed to do (destiny) and by making the most out of life by using the principles of the earth (geomancy). Is this what the Masters meant by Tien, Di and Ren? Therefore, can it be said that feng shui alone does not bring balance and harmony. The usage of geomancy (feng shui), study of one's destiny (bazi) and being correct, a person can achieve inner harmony.

Do not confuse mankind luck with feng shui, as feng shui (or the older names of it like Kan Yu and Di li) is about the principles of the earth. Feng Shui has nothing to do with mankind luck and destiny. So, does it mean that feng shui cannot help in attaining wealth or a career or a wife? Yes, it can help, but in a way it is meant to be. To further elaborate, I would say that you can only have what you are destined for and not what you think you want.

As a geomancer, I feel it is necessary to explain this: we can predict the future (through bazi) and we can tap into the good qi (through feng shui), but what we cannot do is control your deeds that solely lies in your hands. Many will be unwilling to understand this. After all, human psyche is such that we want someone else to solve our problems. Everyone is ready to curse destiny and God, but no one is ready to look into themselves for answers. The ones who have, well I can vouch for them and say that they have it all. They have balanced themselves and have found inner harmony.

(This article has been inspired by a client who found inner harmony while enquiring about his destiny.)
