Last month I wrote about location of bedrooms and direction of bed heads. This month I continue with the article on placement of the stove and locating the kitchen.
In the above diagram the kitchen is located in the north/northeast sector however the stove is facing towards the west direction and is located in east/southeast.
In bazhai it is important to understand the difference between location and direction. Directions are derived from a person's kua number (to know your directions click here) whereas locations are derived from the house. Correct blending is required, relying on one and not following the other will be harmful.
Rule 5 - locating the kitchen
The kitchen is an area where food is being cooked for the entire family. Different masters have different opinions on the location of the kitchen. qi.
5.1 - Most contemporary masters of feng shui agree that the kitchen should be in one of the houses four inauspicious locations. If this matches with your inauspicious directions then it is even better.
e.g. For a gua 1 person (inauspicious directions are southwest, northwest, northeast and west) a house sitting north (inauspicious locations are similar to the gua 1 person) and facing south will be ideal. In this case the location of the kitchen should be in southwest or northwest or northeast or west.
5.2 - Some contemporary masters say kitchen should be located in one of your four inauspicious directions especially if the house gua formula locations doesnot match with your directions.
e.g. For a gua 1 person (inauspicious directions are southwest, northwest, northeast and west) a house sitting west and facing east will not be suitable, however if the person is living in one then according to some contemporary masters the person should opt for location of his/her kitchen according to their personal gua formula. For this case the kitchen should be located in southwest or northwest or northeast or west even though according to the house gua formula these locations are auspicious.
In some cases it is not possible to change kitchen in these cases location of the stove/oven/gas range and direction of the stove/oven/gas range matters.
5.3 - Some contemporary masters say kitchen should be located in one of the four inauspicious locations according to the house.
e.g. For a gua 1 person (inauspicious directions are southwest, northwest, northeast and west) a house sitting west (inauspicious directions will be east, southeast, south and north) and facing east will not be suitable, however if the person is living in one then according to some contemporary masters the person should opt for location of his/her kitchen according to the house gua formula. For this case the kitchen should be located in north even though according to the personal gua formula these locations are auspicious.
In some cases it is not possible to change kitchen in these cases location of the stove/oven/gas range and direction of the stove/oven/gas range matters.
Observation for 5.2 and 5.3 -
Here I think the basic understanding of qi is important. It is said that inauspicious qi can be suppressed by locating the kitchen in that area. Most contemporary masters have different rules because of the word 'inauspicious qi'. According to bazhai there are two kinds of inauspicious qi one from a person's personal gua formula and the other from the houses gua formula. It has been specified earlier that house gua formula is used for locating rooms inside the house and personal gua trigram is used to place bed, stove, study etc. Therefore logically in this case the house gua trigram inauspicious locations should be used to locate the kitchen.
Just to be on the safe side till all the ancient books on ba zhai are translated, understood and finally agreed upon, if you are facing a 5.2 or 5.3 related problem it is wiser to opt for the least worst direction of the person to locate the kitchen. In the above e.g. the kitchen would be best placed in north, it is the ho hai location according to the house gua formula and the fu wei direction of the person.
Rule 6 - placing the stove
It is important to note that placing the stove in the correct location and making it face the correct direction is important. You may have your stove located in the south portion of the kitchen but if you have the knobs facing the north then it means your stove is located in the south and facing the north.
The illustration below will help you to judge the facing of the stove and take the measurements.
6.1 - Nearly all contemporary masters agree that the stove knobs should be towards one of the favorable directions according to the personal gua formula preferably towards sheng qi , tien yi , nien yen or fu wei depending on what the person requires. It is the location of the stove that they differ in opinion.
6.2 - Some masters suggest that the location of the stove should be according to the inauspicious location of the house, therefore according to some masters if you are gua 1 staying in east sitting house and your kitchen is located in the southwest then you can place your stove in west or northeast. (Most contemporary masters cringe at the idea of having a kitchen or stove located in the northwest, the reason being northwest represents the head of the family (father) and elementally is metal in nature, having a stove in this location would mean a clash between metal and fire harming the father of the family).
6.3 - Some contemporary masters suggest that the location of the stove should be according to the unfavorable directions of the personal gua formula but the direction of the stove knobs should be towards the favorable direction according to personal gua formula.
e.g. - If you are Gua 2 then the location of the stove should be in north, south, southeast or east it doesnot matter what are the favorable locations according to the house gua formula. The stove knobs should be facing northeast, west, northwest or southwest.
6.4 - Some contemporary masters suggest that the location of the stove should be according to the unfavorable directions of the personal gua formula but the direction of the stove knobs should be towards the favorable direction according to house gua formula.
e.g. - If you are Gua 2 then the location of the stove should be in north, south, southeast or east. The stove knobs should be facing the houses auspicious locations.
Before I end this month's bazhai article I would like to add that in my few years of experience I have observed that it is what the person needs that matters and not what he/she wants. In other words if a person is going to have health problems this year then using the tien yi direction for stove knob facing would be good. To know the kind of luck you are going through it is essential to get your bazi (four pillars of destiny) analyzed.
