Last month I wrote about matching the house and door with the owner of a house. This month I continue with the article regarding location of bedrooms and direction of bed heads.
In the above diagram the bedroom is located in the southeast however the bed head is towards the south direction.
In bazhai it is important to understand the difference between location and direction. Directions are derived from a person's kua number (to know your directions click here) whereas locations are derived from the house. Correct blending is required, relying on one and not following the other will be harmful.
Rule 3 - locating the bedroom
The bedroom is an area where you rejuvenate and recharge yourself. Different masters have different opinions on the location of the bedroom.
3.1 - Most contemporary masters of feng shui agree that the bedroom should be in one of the houses four auspicious locations. If this matches with your auspicious directions then it is even better.
e.g. For a gua 1 person (auspicious directions are southeast, east, south and north) a house sitting north (auspicious locations are similar to the gua 1 person) and facing south will be ideal. In this case the location of the bedroom should be in north or south or east.
3.2 - Some contemporary masters say bedrooms should be located in one of your four auspicious directions especially if the house gua formula locations doesnot match with your directions.
e.g. For a gua 1 person (auspicious directions are southeast, east, south and north) a house sitting west and facing east will not be suitable, however if the person is living in one then according to some contemporary masters the person should opt for location of his/her bedroom according to their personal gua formula. For this case the bedroom sould still be located in north or south or east even though according to the house gua formula these locations are inauspicious.
Observation for 3.1 and 3.2 -
The time factor plays a major role, you can stay in a bad location according to the house gua formula and good location according to your personal gua formula but if the timing is wrong in others words if the inauspicious star is bad during that particular year or month expect some bad things to happen depending on which inauspicious area you live in.
In some cases it is not possible to change bedrooms in these cases location of the bed and direction of the bed head matters.
3.3 - If a couple of different favorable directions have to choose a bedroom then some masters say that the room should match the main earning person, however the door to the room could match the other halves favorable direction (in this case yen nien is the best direction).
e.g. - If you are gua 9 and your spouse is gua 7 living in a south sitting house then you could locate your bedroom in the south or southeast and have the door to the bedroom facing northeast or west.
Observation for 3.3 -
The door is the mouth of a house and in case the mouth of a room it is wiser to locate the door according to favorable locations of the house then the personal gua. In the above case the room and the door donot match elementally and this can create more problems than harmony.
3.4 - If a couple of different favorable directions have to choose a bedroom then some masters say that the room should match the person whose personal gua's direction doesnot match the house gua direction. In other words if the house is unsuitable for you and suitable for your partner then opt for a room that is suitable according to your personal gua number.
e.g. - If you are gua 9 and your spouse is gua 7 living in a south sitting house then according to few contemporary masters you should locate your bedroom in the west or southwest even though the locations are unsuitable according to the house gua formula.
Observation for 3.4 -

You have to consider the main earning member, if gua 9 is the main earning member than it would be better to locate the bedroom in the south or southeast.
3.5 - Most contemporary masters agree that the door to the bedroom should be located in the yen nien location of the house gua formula, most suitable if both partners and house gua are favorable with each other.
3.6 - Most contemporary masters suggest that the location of bedroom should preferably be in the fu wei area according to the house gua formula. If not possible then tien yi or yen nien is second choice. Sheng qi is not selected as the bedroom area because the qi of sheng qi is considered to be extremely strong and vibrant to allow a person to have good sound sleep.
3.6 - Some contemporary masters suggest that the location of bedroom should preferably be in the fu wei area according to the personal gua formula. If not possible then tien yi or yen nien is second choice.
Rule 4 - placing the bed
It is important to note that bed head means the direction your head is in while you lie down. You may have your bed located in the south portion of your room but if you place your head towards the North then it means your bed head is towards the North.
4.1 - All masters agree that the bed head should be towards one of the favorable directions according to the personal gua formula preferably towards fu wei, tien yior yen nien. It is the location of the bed that they differ in opinion.
4.2 - Some masters suggest that the location of the bed should be according to the good location of the house, therefore according to some masters if you are gua 1 staying in east sitting house and your bedroom is located in the north then you can place your bed in east, southeast or north.
4.3 - Some contemporary masters suggest that the location of the bed should be according to the favorable directions of the personal gua formula.
e.g. - If you are Gua 2 then the location of the bed should be in west, southwest or northwest it doesnot matter what are the favorable locations according to the house gua formula.
4.4 - A few contemporary masters suggest that the location of the bed should be elementally suitable for that room otherwise effects will not be good.
e.g. - Each star whether auspicious or inauspicious is represented by an element, hence if you have the bedroom in fu wei location whose element is wood it is preferable to have the location of the bed in fire or wood but not in metal or earth. Therefore in this room you can locate the bed in fu wei or sheng qi but not in tien yi or yen nien.
Observations for 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 -
Location of the bed is best when it is elementally supported especially when the room is located in an inauspicious area.
Locating the bed according to auspicious areas of the house gua formula and keeping the direction of the bed head towards favorable direction of personal gua formula is the best mixture. In this as well keep the timing factor and the elements in mind.
Before I end this month's bazhai article I would like to add that in my few years of experience I have observed that it is what the person needs that matters and not what he/she wants. In other words if a person is going to have health problems this year then using the tien yi area for his/her bedroom would be good. To know the kind of luck you are going through it is essential to get your bazi (four pillars of destiny) analyzed.
