Inspiration

For the past nine years I have been following the news on Irom Sharmila Chanu. In November 2000, a 26 year old girl, from a small village in Manipur, started a non-violent fight against one of the draconian laws in India. During this course of time she has been imprisoned every year for 361 days, kept in solitary confinement in a high security prison. If that itself is not enough to break one’s spirit, she is on a fast, no food or water consumed. The police authorities force feed her nasally she takes it a step further and uses dry cotton wool to clean her teeth.

She is aptly called the “iron lady of Manipur”. To even think of walking in her footsteps one needs nerves of steel, astounding determination and an iron soul.

In this world of consumerism where almost everyone is like a rabbit running after the next best carrot, this is a rare act of selfless love for one’s people. Sharmila has stirred my soul and I can feel it bowing in respect.
